Meet the Speakers

 

Nicola Anthony - Lockton

Nicola specialises in mitigating the risks facing financial and professional firms. Her diverse career experience assists her in delivering comprehensive risk management support and innovative risk transfer solutions for law firms. She has particular expertise in Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance and Anti Money Laundering.

Before joining Lockton Nicola worked for a global insurance broker, providing risk management support and guidance to top 100 law firms. She was a Regulatory Supervision Manager at a legal regulator, the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC). During which time she was a member of the Legal Sector Affinity Group and attended meetings which discussed the implementation and transposition of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 and the Legal Sector Guidance that followed.

Her experience allows her to inform clients on key risk areas such as Anti Money Laundering and other emerging risks, as well as working with clients and prospects to find bespoke solutions to ensure they remain compliant with the latest regulations affecting the legal sector.

 

Tim Barnett - Credas

Tim Barnett has served as CEO of Credas for five years, joining when the company was just two years old and bringing with him over two decades of experience in leading fast growth businesses. Widely recognised for having overseen the evolution of Credas into an award-winning and sector leading enterprise platform, delivering consistent year-on-year expansion alongside new technical innovation.

Under his leadership, Credas became one of the first identity verification providers to achieve certification under the UK Government’s Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF) in 2022. The company continues to collaborate closely with government bodies to remain at the forefront of regulatory compliance in the B2B space.

Credas has established a market-leading position within the property sector. Today, over 50% of property transactions involves a Credas compliance check, with over 10 million verifications processed annually and the Credas mobile App ranked at #5 In addition to his executive role, Tim serves on the advisory board of FinTech Wales, is a Fintech Foundry Mentor and sits on the Employment Advisory Board for HM Prison service. Tim also plays an active role in a number of property industry trade groups

 

Amy Bell - Teal Compliance

Amy Bell is a leading expert in legal compliance, specialising in anti-money laundering and risk management for law firms. With over 20 years’ experience in the legal sector, she is the founder of Teal Compliance and AML Sorted, helping firms build practical, sustainable compliance frameworks. Amy is a sought-after speaker and trainer, known for translating complex regulations into straightforward guidance. Passionate about driving cultural change, she has developed industry standards and training adopted across the UK and internationally. Amy is committed to making compliance more effective, less stressful, and better aligned with the realities of modern legal practice.

 

Nick Bloy - Wellbeing Republic

Nick Bloy is a former Lawyer and HR Business Partner with a Masters in Chemistry. He’s the founder of Wellbeing Republic, a coaching consultancy that specialises in individual and organisational flourishing. He works with organisations in the UK and internationally, across multiple different industry sectors (including law, professional services, financial services, government and others), in his capacity as a coach, keynote speaker, facilitator and strategist. Nick was on the research committee of LawCare’s ground-breaking 2021 research study ‘Life in the Law’, looking at how the culture and practice of law affects mental health.

 

Brian Boehmer - Lockton

Brian is a founding Partner at Lockton and is responsible for our UK National Professional and Financial Lines Practice, with offices in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester and Glasgow.

Throughout his 23 plus years with the business he has specialised in providing Professional Indemnity Insurance solutions across all professions. With the last 14 or so years dedicated almost entirely to the legal Profession of England and Wales.

In addition to managing a portfolio of clients, he has a leading role in negotiations with insurers. As such has a wealth of experience in structuring and administrating group insurance solutions.

 

Joe Bryant - Beale & Co

Joe specialises in defending lawyers and insurance brokers (and their London market insurers) against claims for professional negligence and has an established client base including some of the largest legal and insurance firms both in the UK and internationally.

He advises on the full spectrum of issues facing the legal and broking professions, from M&A lawyers facing complex corporate and tax litigation on the one hand, through to Lloyds brokers having to deal with disputed declinatures and Insurance Act interpretation on the other. He is routinely instructed by the insurance market to act for its policy holders in resolving their disputes, as well as providing coverage advice on policy interpretation.

 

Luke Haddon - Keystone Law

Luke Haddon is the Money Laundering Reporting Officer at Keystone Law, where he leads the firm’s approach to anti-financial crime compliance. He is responsible for developing, maintaining, and auditing the firm’s policies, controls, and procedures, and acts as the primary liaison with relevant authorities when necessary.

A Fellow of the International Compliance Association, Luke provides practical, day-to-day support to Keystone’s partners, particularly in matters involving complex national and international legislation. His work frequently touches on international trade, inward investment, and the acquisition of super prime assets.

Luke began his career in financial crime compliance at Linklaters, working in both London and New York, before joining Keystone Law in 2019.

 

Luke Jones - Fortegra

Luke has significant Professional Indemnity underwriting experience developed with both company and Lloyd’s markets over the past 14 years. Luke currently works for Fortegra as a lead underwriter across all professions in the market. Luke is a specialist in Solicitors, Construction/A&E, SPPI, Accountants, Brokers and IFA’s. Luke has also managed delegated business across UK and Europe and is proficient in Spanish.

 

Jason Nash - Browne Jacobson

Jason joined in May 2022 to launch our professional indemnity team in Manchester. He is recognised by the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners as a leading individual in this area of law. He advises insurers and insured professional clients on all areas of professional negligence claims including coverage.

Jason has over 30 years’ experience of defending a wide range of professionals including solicitors, surveyors and construction professionals. At his previous firm, he built a market leading practice in Manchester and has brought with him a core of this to create our professional indemnity team. The team has already been identified as one to watch by the Legal 500.

 

Gary Oldroyd - Browne Jacobson

Gary is a partner in our financial and professional risk team. Recognised for many years as a leader in his field by Chambers and Partners, Gary has specialised in the defence of claims against lawyers for over 20 years and he has been involved in several high-profile claims in this area.

Gary has acted for many of the ‘Participating Insurers’ who are authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to provide insurance cover to law firms as well as for many excess layer markets. In this capacity, Gary regularly provides coverage advice to insurers, in addition to regulatory advice to their insureds. Increasingly, Gary assists law firms to manage the consequences of data breaches including law firms who are the victims of cyber-crime.

Gary has particular expertise in managing the provision of claims handling services to professional indemnity insurers, having dealt with several schemes throughout his career.

 

Niya Phiri - Clyde & Co

For two decades, Niya has specialised in advising and defending law firms and legal professionals in the increasingly challenging environment in which law firms and legal professionals operate.

Niya defends law firms facing complex and high value professional negligence and other claims at all stages from pre-action through to trial and appeal.  Niya has been involved in a number of cases which go beyond the usual parameters of legal malpractice into issues of civil fraud and dishonesty in both litigation and regulatory matters and regularly defends claims brought by third parties and/or litigants in person.

Her practice also includes advising clients on a wide range of risk and regulatory issues including self-reporting, AML, sexual misconduct, SLAPPs, and other conduct and compliance issues. Niya handles internal investigations, representing clients facing SRA investigations and dealing with Production Notices, as well as defending clients facing disciplinary proceedings before the SDT and related appeals. She has substantial experience of balancing the technical complexities often engaged in professional discipline work and the crisis management skills required to navigate clients through the most challenging situations.

 

Elizabeth Rimmer - Lawcare

LawCare is the mental health charity for the legal sector across the UK, offering free, confidential emotional support, peer support, and information to people working and training in law. LawCare also advocates for better working practices in law to support mental health, and actively leads cultural transformation through education, training, and research.

Elizabeth has been managing and developing charities in the mental health sector for over 20 years. She joined LawCare in 2014. Elizabeth started her working life as a solicitor specialising in clinical negligence, practicing at Leigh Day. Elizabeth is Co Chair of the Helplines Partnership (national body for support and advice helplines) and a member of the International Bar Association’s Professional Wellbeing Commission and chairs the Commission’s regulatory and ethics workstream group.

 

Helen Rowlands - Clyde & Co

Helen Rowlands is a Partner in Clyde & Co’s Lawyers’ Defence, Regulatory, Disciplinary and Investigations Team. She has over 20 years’ experience of defending law firms in malpractice disputes. Helen’s practice focuses on complex and high value claims against magic circle and other international law firms, and she has defended a wide range of claims, including those involving structured finance, pensions, tax, property, litigation, contract, and trust issues. Helen also has experience of advising on risk management and disciplinary issues involving law firms. She has published articles in Commercial Litigation Journal, New Law Journal and Solicitors Journal, and speaks regularly on professional liability and risk management issues.

 

Marc Rowson - Lockton

Marc specialises in the arrangement and placement of Professional Indemnity Insurance for Professional service firms with a particular focus on the insurance and risk requirements of the Legal Profession of England and Wales.

In addition to managing a significant portfolio of clients, Marc is experienced in the structuring and administering of group insurance solutions for the Legal sector. Whether an individual client or group scheme, Marc looks to help his clients identify, prioritise and mitigate risk, assisting them in sourcing the appropriate insurer and coverage to meet with their business needs.

 

Julia Salasky - Legl

Julia is a lawyer and entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of Legl (www.legl.com), an award-winning platform enabling law firms to manage AML risk, client onboarding, cash flow and client experience and better understand their client base. Legl is used by over 450 UK law firms including 40 of the Top 200. She previously founded CrowdJustice, the award winning platform democratising access to the legal system, and prior to that was a lawyer at Linklaters and the United Nations. She has been named the Financial Times Legal Innovator of the Year, a Marie Claire Future Shaper, and to the Lawyer’s Hot 100.

 

Neil Shah - Mills & Reeve

With over 15 years’ experience in PI, Neil specialises in high value/complex solicitors PI (defence and coverage). He is a professional indemnity partner in Mills & Reeve London office. He has also undertaken three London Market client secondments where he has claims handled a broad range of Solicitors PI notifications for A-Rated Insurers. He has worked on solicitors’ PI schemes with specialist Insurers/Brokers from trainee level and has handled solicitors claims from ‘cradle to the grave’. He has successfully litigated/resolved complex multi-party claims against lawyers and underlying Counsel. He is commercially focused and puts his clients at the heart of everything he does.

 

Paul Smith - Travelers

Paul Smith is a solicitor and risk management practitioner. He began in general practice in the 1980s, dealing with a variety of legal work, before joining the Solicitors Indemnity Fund in 1991 as a claims handler. He subsequently led claims handling, project and change teams before moving to do similar work at BLG Claims in 2009. He has been at Travelers since 2010 as a senior risk management consultant in the Risk Management Team.

 

Lisa Taylor - Mills & Reeve

Lisa joined Mills & Reeve in 2005 and is a professional indemnity partner in Mills & Reeve London office. Lisa is regularly instructed by insurers and their insured clients to defend and resolve professional negligence claims. She has extensive experience in dealing with claims against all types of professionals, but her focus is on defending law firms and legal professionals. The claims Lisa deals with are often high value, multi-party and have complex issues and she has extensive experience of successful resolution of claims through ADR / mediation.

 

Angus Turner - Mills & Reeve

Angus is a specialist in professional indemnity claims, acting for the insurance market for over 30 years. He is recognised as a leader in his field by legal directories and his team are ranked number one. Angus specialises in defending complex, high value claims against law firms as well as having a coverage advisory practice. He trained with Mills & Reeve, becoming a partner there in 2000.

 

Sarah White - HDI

Sarah White is the Underwriting Manager and Head of Law firms PI in the Professional Liability team at HDI Global Specialty. Sarah's repsonsible for the whole portfolio of law firms ranging from small and medium sized firms to large international and US law firms. Sarah has been underwriting law firms’ PI for more than 15 years.
